Police approve? Is it really legal?
CENTRAL FLORIDA — Red light cameras, speed traps, DUI checkpoints, some local drivers said they’ll never get a ticket for any of them again. They say, it’s because of special tracking on their GPS.
Leslie Mangali has never been pulled over.
“I intend to keep it that way,” he said.
Mangali found a legal way to avoid tickets. He can spot traffic cameras before they spot him. He also knows where police tend to hide all through Central Florida.
“It’s alerting me to a speed trap. A cop car is ahead,” he said.
Leslie’s GPS unit gives much more than directions. He downloaded a program called “Phantom Alert.”
Here’s how it works: Drivers all around the country locate and then report speed traps, red light cameras, school zones and even DUI checkpoints in real time. Other drivers verify the locations and then users get warnings from their GPS units about 1,200-feet in advance.
“To save us from getting costly tickets in these hard times we are going through,” Mangali said.
Eyewitness News tested the system on dozens of streets in metro-Orlando. The alerts were accurate.
Joe Scott invented Phantom Alert after he and his friends kept getting tickets from red light cameras.
“We have a lot of cops who are our customers,” Scott said.
Police give it mixed reviews. Some, like the Washington D.C. police chief, say it helps drivers break the law, because if they don’t break the law they don’t need the service.
Spokesmen for the Florida Highway Patrol, Orlando police, and six Central Florida sheriffs all said they have no problem with the system because it could make drivers more alert. They say they catch habitual law breakers anyway.
Joe Scott says “His service does not enable bad drivers and he claims revealing DUI checkpoints discourages drunk driving by showing how many checkpoints there are“.
“And they aren’t breaking the law because we are helping them to know what the law is,” Scott said.
Most People Have 2.5 Seconds To React to a Speed Trap. With A GPS Detector You’ll have All Week.
The service costs around $40 per year or $100 for a lifetime subscription.
